PM Trudeau plays the ‘assault weapons’ card

PM Trudeau of Canada said this about so-called “assault weapons”:

“These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada," Trudeau said in a briefing where he announced the decision.

PM Trudeau was reacting to a couple of mass shootings in Canada.

The opposition was quick to react, especially in all of those provinces west of Ontario won by conservatives in the last election:

"Canada’s Conservative opposition party leader Andrew Scheer denounced the ban, pointing out the Nova Scotia gunman used illegally obtained firearms, which the ban doesn’t address.

“Trudeau is using the current pandemic and the horrific attack in Nova Scotia to push his ideological agenda and make major firearms policy changes,” he said in a statement.

Using the pandemic to push an ideological agenda?   Where have we heard that one before?

By the way, PM Trudeau's Liberal Party got 33.1% of the popular vote but managed to form a coalition to stay on.  The Conservatives got 34.1% but 36 fewer seats.

How does a Prime Minister with 33.1% of the votes get to push an ideological agenda?  Well, that's what I'm hearing from my favorite pundits like Spencer Fernando:  "GUN GRAB: Trudeau government lets criminals out of jail while criminalizing law-abiding Canadians."

As we learned down here, banning assault weapons had little, if any, impact on crime.  As Polifact wrote:

"The drop during the ban is less clear cut."

In fact, Democrat majorities in the US House and Senate plus a president chose to forget the law.

Canadians will learn what we all know.  Criminals do not respect laws.  They will get their hands on whatever firearm is available.
