Spare me the indignation over Trump's commutation of Blago's sentence
I agree that Rod Blagojevich, AKA Blago, was corrupt and incompetent. I am an Illinois resident, and I didn't vote for him either time he ran for governor, and I certainly didn't endorse him for his second term as some media outlets and Democrats in Illinois and around the country did, despite seeing how corrupt and incompetent he was during his first term.
But eight years is a long time to serve (let alone 14) for white-collar criminals or politicians. It is as excessive as the seven- to nine-year recommendation for Roger Stone to serve on a process crime when there was no underlying crime and when the whole investigation was based on fraudulent documents and a series of lies to the FISA court.
Blago speaks to reporters in front of his home (YouTube screen grab).
It might be helpful if journalists looked up average sentences for criminal offenses when they support a 14-year sentence for Blago or a seven- to nine-year sentence for Roger Stone.
According to the U.S Department of Justice, the median time served for some crimes is as follows:
Violent of offenses, non-murder: A little over two years
Rape, sexual assault: 4.2 years
Weapons charges: 16 months
Fraud: 11 months
I couldn't find what the average time served for incompetence is.
In California, and I assume much of the rest of the country, child-molesters get only one to six years.
Child Molestation Punishment and Sentence under California Penal Code 647.6 PC
If you are convicted of child molestation, you face a sentence of up to 364 days in jail or six years in prison. Your sentence may also include fines of up to $5,000, and you may be required to register as a sex offender.
But Blago deserves 14 years? The only crime I could find where people actually serve that long is murder, and Blago certainly did not commit murder. I bet members of gangs serve very little time, and how often do we see career criminals out on the street commit additional violent crimes? I have always thought judges who continually release violent criminals on the streets to harm the public should be punished.
I will believe journalists are sincere on reporting on Blago when:
- They go back and research and report on the commutations and pardons that Obama and Clinton handed out. Maybe they could start by looking up Puerto Rican terrorists.
- They seek to imprison Hillary for all her criminal violations and kickbacks from foreign countries. When they look at all the kickbacks that went to members of the Biden family.
- They seek to imprison all the people that worked in the Obama administration who committed perjury and committed fraud on the FISA court and the American people while seeking to destroy people for their association with Trump.
- They stop supporting sanctuary cities and states who refuse to enforce the laws of the land while they protect dangerous illegal immigrants from prosecution.
Otherwise, I will just assume that this Blago story is just one of the continuous hit jobs on Trump as they seek to put Democrats back in power. Facts certainly haven't mattered to the media for a long time.
