Time to shut down the runaway impeachment train
Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell put in the rules that the ability to stop the trial can be filed at various intervals. However, Townhall is reporting that lead counsel for the president are refusing to file a motion to stop the impeachment train wreck.
Jay Sekulow, President Trump's personal attorney, explained Wednesday why he's not interested in calling for a motion to dismiss the impeachment case against his client.
"I want to let them try their case, and we want to try our case because we believe without a question the president will be acquitted," Sekulow told reporters. "There is not a doubt."
Another reporter then asked if that meant he is ruling out motion to dismiss at any point in the trial.
"Those of you who know me know I don't rule out anything," he replied.
So why won't the defense counsel stop the runaway train? Here are some possibilities:
1. They need to shine.
Maybe they believe that they worked so hard on their refutations that they cannot let them go. Let's hope that isn't the reason. Or maybe they believe that humiliating the House managers is the way to go. However, in my view, it is best to call for dismissal now. Let's hope Sekulow doesn't "feel the zeal" and prolong the trial.
2. They need to answer the charges line by line so the president can be publicly vindicated.
Sekulow seems to believe this in his public statement. However, the House managers are shooting themselves in the foot. No one but fanatics believes they are making a dent. Their self-deception runs deep. Therefore, the flimsy charges don't need to be countered item by item. The best vindication for the president is to stop the trial now. It will send the clear message that the Senate can see through the silliness. "Enough is enough," they will telegraph to the American voters. Trump will then be completely vindicated, better than after an extended defense.
3. For political reasons, the defense counsel are allowing the self-deception to run its course.
This political calculation may be the only legitimate reason to allow the runaway train to keep going. People are turning against the House managers and the Dems in droves. People are fed up and can't wait to vote this November, to throw the Dems out of the House. The more they talk, the worse things get.
4. The defense counsel believe that the GOP wouldn't vote to stop the trial early.
If true, this only goes to show how badly misguided some members of the Senate GOP are. They seem to believe they need to give a fair hearing of all the "evidence." For example, Sen. Braun of Indiana mentioned outside the Senate chamber that we need to come together; then he went on about how his critics during his Senate campaign called him names. However, it is time for irenic (I won't say "weak") senators like Braun to call it like it is. Only the left are making everyone else miserable with their nonsense. They are the ones dividing the country, not Sen. Braun and the conservatives.
Fanatics by definition are not easily persuadable. They are easily blinded. They are even irrational. The Democrats are fanatics. They have no proof, but only hearsay evidence and suppositions and then conclusions drawn from the thinnest of "evidence." For example, some of the people whose video recording the managers have played (out of context) and they interviewed in committee have explicitly denied that Trump engaged in any quid pro quo. But instead, the fanatics with their millions of words make it seem as if the evidence were a slam dunk. It is not. Trump just made political calculations to put America first and root out corruption and weaken his political opponents who may have committed some crimes overseas. He played political hardball. He did the right thing.
There is certainly no "treason, bribery or other high crimes or misdemeanors."
Therefore, we all know what the final vote will be. Therefore, it is time to put a stop to the grandstanding of the House fanatics.
If the defense call to stop the trial, as they should, all the GOP senators and their allies had better not overthink things; they must vote yes. If the "moderate few" don't vote that way, they will appear open-minded about trash, which doesn't look good for them back in their home states. They have already stuck together to correctly table all the foolish amendments that the managers proposed on the first day. It is time to stick together one last time to stop the runaway train, for the good of our Republic.
