Steve Hilton and the NeverTrumps' big mistake
Conservatives may not know what exactly to think about Steve Hilton's big idea, "positive populism," but there's a lot for conservatives to like in Hilton's Sunday-night program on Fox News, The Next Revolution. The best parts of Hilton's shows are his spirited monologues, which might border on rants if they weren't so sensible and righteous. Hilton's January 12 monologue was particularly good, and it was headlined "The Trump Revolution."
Hilton thinks the establishment just doesn't understand President Trump, whom he characterizes as a results-oriented pragmatist. Hilton is saying that Trump's approach to public policy is one of both-and rather than either-or.
Hilton's monologue contains a brief montage of clips of the crazed lackeys on the other cable news channels who seem to think Americans care about their takes on public matters. But because I've admired his columns since at least the 1980s, this kid must wonder what the devil George Will is doing in this squalid lineup. Well, Mr. Will has become a "NeverTrumper," as Hilton calls them. The Big Mistake of such people is their failure to recognize the biggest internal threat to America, and that's the Democratic Party, which is now solidly socialist.
If your curiosity is piqued by the inclusion of Will, know that it's an outtake from a talk he gave at the Aspen Institute last year titled "Conservatism under Threat," which one can watch here if you know enough to click on the cute little fuchsia arrow on the right. The video is more than 50 minutes, but it's quite worth watching, despite Will's NeverTrump failing; it even has some decent humor. But first, you need to watch Hilton, which will take only five minutes, as I've positioned it to start after the opening preliminaries to save you some time:
