'Turncoat' Trump?
During the campaign, Donald Trump employed a tactic of labeling several of his opponents with titles he believed would identify them in the most negative light. Some of his favorites were “Lyin Ted,” “Little Marco,” “Low-Energy Jeb,” “Crazy Bernie,” “Goofy Elizabeth Warren” (aka “Faux-cahontas”) and a Trumper’s all-time favorite: “Crooked Hillary.”
Donald Trump won the presidential primary and the presidential election for one reason and one reason alone: millions and millions of people believed he was a true outsider who would bring real change to Washington. People gathered by the thousands at Trump campaign rallies and heard him say “believe me” over and over again about his intentions regarding every major issue he based his campaign on. And when Donald Trump said “believe me,” the people believed him!
Donald Trump told his loyal supporters at almost every rally that he would be the people’s champion on these important issues. But in light of Trump’s campaign message of any change the people could actually believe in, since he won the election, there’s been a growing concern among many Trump supporters that he might be morphing into a Washington establishment politician who promises one thing to get elected and delivers something completely different.
Trump supporters are troubled after hearing what seems to be a change of position on Hillary’s alleged illegal server and the Clinton Foundation, building “the” wall, immigration, and global warming. Trump supporters are also troubled that he so quickly embraced GOP establishment leaders like Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell and appointed Gov. Nikki Haley as U.N. ambassador despite the fact that she slammed him personally during the campaign. Trump supporters are also very upset that Trump would even consider Mitt Romney as a cabinet member after what he said to derail Trump’s campaign.
Trump supporters are very serious about the stances he took and the changes he promised to make if elected president. It would be a slap in the face of every Trump supporter who helped put him in the White House if he caves on any issue.
Here is a partial list of “believe me” promises made by candidate Donald Trump that his supporters will never forget:
I will build a wall on the border – BELIEVE ME!
Mexico will pay for the wall – BELIEVE ME!
I will repeal and replace Obamacare – BELIEVE ME!
I will not allow TPP to happen – BELIEVE ME!
I will renegotiate the Iran nuke deal – BELIEVE ME!
I am not beholden to political Washington insiders or special interest groups – BELIEVE ME!
I will drain the swamp – BELIEVE ME!
I will be your champion – BELIEVE ME!
If “candidate” Donald Trump said “believe me” once on the campaign stump, he said it a thousand times. And there are many more “believe me” statements candidate Donald Trump made on a wide range of foreign and domestic issues not listed here.
What remains to be seen is if “President Elect” Donald Trump is really changing his position on some of his “believe me” promises, or is this all just a part of the liberal media spin to twist Trump’s words to make him look like another run-of-the-mill politician, demoralize his supporters, and encourage his opponents?
Based on Trump supporters’ understanding of liberal media bias, for now, they may give President-Elect Trump the benefit of the doubt. But “believe us”: if it turns out that “President” Trump is not the same person as “candidate” Trump, then “we the people,” who took Donald Trump at his word, will have a catchy label for him to wear all the way to the 2020 presidential Election.
“Turncoat Trump”!
