Massachusetts college will not fly American flag on campus
Hampshire college in Massachusetts announced that it won't fly the American flag on campus "for the time being." The policy came about when the school lowered the flag to half mast after the election of Donald Trump "as an expression of grief over the violent deaths being suffered in this country and globally[.]"
What "violent deaths suffered in this country" is this idiot talking about? Perhaps he means the death of reason or the death of logic. We don't know because Hampshire's president, Jonathan Lash, doesn't cite any examples.
This intellectually challenged fool gave a hysterical explanation for refusing to fly the flag.
"We hope this will enable us to instead focus our efforts on addressing racist, misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and behaviors," Hampshire's president, Jonathan Lash, said in a statement.
A day after the presidential election, the college decided to lower the flag to half staff “as an expression of grief over the violent deaths being suffered in this country and globally," Lash said, but that angered some students on campus and in the community.
Instead, the college will not fly any flags on campus "for the time being."
"Unfortunately, our efforts to inclusively convey respect and sorrow have had the opposite effect. We have heard from many on our campus as well as from neighbors in the region that, by flying the flag at half-staff, we are actually causing hurt, distress and insult. Our decision has been seen as disrespectful of the traditional expression of national mourning and has been especially painful to our Hampshire colleagues who are veterans or families of veterans," Lash said.
"Some have perceived the action of lowering the flag as a commentary on the results of the presidential election -- this, unequivocally, was not our intent. After some preliminary consultation with campus constituents (we understand much more is needed), we have decided that we will not fly the U.S. flag or any other flags at Hampshire for the time being."
The decision not to fly any flags on campus has also sparked backlash, and thousands have flooded the college's Facebook page with feedback to call it a "horrible decision" and "appalling."
To blame an entire nation and its history for the actions of a few peabrains who act on their racist or bigoted impulses is outrageously stupid. There are 300 million people in this country – the vast majority of them are reasonably tolerant of our differences and wouldn't harm a fly, much less a homosexual or Muslim. This blanket condemnation of America and Americans as violent racists and bigots is anti-intellectual – the antithesis of the kind of critical thinking you should expect from an institution of higher education.
How could this mountebank not realize that lowering the flag to half staff would cause tremendous psychic pain to veterans and their families? Forget the fact that Lash lied about the election not being a factor in his decision to lower the flag. He issued his hysteria-ridden statement and lowered the flag a day after Donald Trump won. But this is typical of school authorities from kindergarten to colleges when they do things like suspend a student for pointing a Pop-Tart in the shape of a gun at someone, or for wearing an American flag T-shirt to school. They say their actions were "misinterpreted" or that they did no such thing. Lying liberals try to weasel their way out of situations they create with their own stupidity and arrogance.
I suspect that Lash – a cowardly man – will eventually give in, and the flag will once again fly over the college. But the lesson that one should never give in to hysteria and outrageous exaggeration will not be learned by Lash or any of his allies on campus.
