Contempt: The currency of the left
"The lowest form of popular culture - lack of information, misinformation, disinformation and a contempt for the truth or the reality of most people's lives - has overrun real journalism." Carl Bernstein
It is safe to say that Carl Bernstein did not mean to indict the left when he wrote the above, since he is a man of the left. But his words are a fair description of what ails the left and much of the right, and not just in journalism. Contempt. This was exemplified yesterday by the words of Nancy Pelosi when she said:
So many times white non-college educated white [sic] males have voted Republican, they voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three Gs, God being the woman's right to choose.
These words are reminiscent of Obama's derisive "bitter clingers" comment to the swells in San Francisco years ago, in Pelosi's own neighborhood. Her comment perfectly epitomizes the level of contempt the left has for the millions of Americans leftists view as lesser beings, those in flyover country, those who take issue with them on any one of the issues she mentioned.
Add Pelosi's comments to the texts of the leaked DNC emails in which DNC officials mock gays, African-Americans, and Bernie Sanders and his supporters and plan their sabotage of Sanders, Trump, etc., and a more complete picture of the left's hypocrisy emerges. They claim to be the advocates of people they actually revile! We the people are objects of ridicule, use, and abuse in their quest for power.
And what of the millions of truly disenfranchised citizens who supported Sanders, who support Trump – for virtually the same reason: anger? They are to be exploited, lied to, manipulated into mind-numbed Democrat voters along with the millions of immigrants the left is importing in order to firm up the base. As Obama ticked off his "successes " last night, each of them a lie (Iran deal; Obamacare; ending the war in Iraq; the economy; bin Laden, as if killing him ended terrorism, etc.), many of those people whom he has betrayed still believe in him. They vote (68%) in polls that the country is heading in the "wrong direction" but still vote approval of Obama (50%)! They are misinformed, hurting, to be sure, and they deserve better.
It is Obama's policies that have made them desperate, that have deleted ninety-five million people from the labor force, put fifty million people on food stamps, increased the debt by $10T, whose policies directly led to the rise of ISIS and the explosion of terrorism across the world. He has put not just America in grave danger; he has, by leading from behind, engendered chaos around the world. And he is proud of what he has done. That is the conundrum.
Did he set out to undermine, weaken, and endanger the U.S.? Or has he done so due to sheer incompetence? The answer may be both: he loathes the nation he leads, wants to take us down several pegs, and is incompetent. He thinks he is Saul Alinsky-savvy and devious, but he is really Al "I invented the internet" Gore arrogant and Michael "there is no terrorist threat" Moore naive. His denial of the obvious has been cataclysmic for the hundreds of thousands of Christians and Muslims murdered by ISIS throughout the Middle East and now Europe. And his policies also have been devastating to the millions of African-Americans increasingly unemployed thanks to his economic and regulatory dictates and his open borders immigration mandates at home.
For once, he actually referred positively to the Declaration of Independence last night. He did not mean it. He is on record discounting the Constitution to which the Declaration is precursor for being a document of "negative rights." He has not, these past seven years, respected it one bit. He has abrogated it over and over again, and the Republicans in Congress have done nothing to stop him. Thus, Donald Trump is the outlier candidate no one saw coming, least of all mainstream Republicans.
Apparently the Trump and Sanders supporters have finally caught on the to left's true character: contempt for everyone who is not one of them.
"The only cure for contempt is counter-contempt." H.L Mencken
Counter-contempt may be what alters the electoral landscape this year.
