Diet and Autism: A Neurologist Denies Any Connection
Autism is a complicated neurological condition caused by a variety of etiologies. There are many questions about autism that remain unanswered, however, the research that’s available at this time shows no indication that diet or parenting cause this disorder.
In the past psychologists and psychiatrists have blamed parents and particularly mothers for their child’s autism. They were told that autism was the result of withholding affection for the child at some undefined critical developmental stage. This has been proven to be completely inaccurate but the pain of a mother being falsely accused of causing her child’s illness cannot be overstated. The author is repeating this ugly history. This is cruel and ignorant.
It is obvious the author of this article has no background in neuroscience or human nutrition and is completely out of their league on this subject. I am a neurologist, board-certified in both adult and pediatric neurology, with 24 years practice experience. I also have a Masters degree in human nutrition. I also have a son with autism spectrum disorder. Although my extensive professional and personal background on this subject does not mean I am right, it does mean that I am duty bound to defend these people (my patients and their parents) from ignorant slander. The article is very hurtful to the many parents struggling to make the best life possible for their autistic children.
Michael Savage and the author are charlatans.
