Elizabeth Warren's analysis of the GOP conservatives can agree with
Elizabeth Warren took to the Senate floor to bemoan a lack of increase in the minimum wage, saying that unskilled teenagers are clearly worth $15 an hour (plus benefits). Having run many successful businesses during her career as a law school professor, she surely knows what she's talking about.
But then she said something really brilliant about Republicans that I truly do agree with:
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) rolled out a fresh attack against Republicans on Tuesday: They're wasting huge amounts of time.
Pointing to recent GOP efforts to defund the Department of Homeland Security and Planned Parenthood and to attach abortion legislation to a human trafficking bill, among other examples, Warren said Republicans were spending their time chewing through partisan menu items that went nowhere.
"In the past six months, they have burned huge amounts of time as they try to shut down Homeland Security, tried to build a pipeline to help a Canadian oil company, tried to turn a human trafficking bill into a referendum on abortion and now tried to defund Planned Parenthood," Warren said.
Warren is so correct. The GOP has wasted huge amounts of time on bills that go nowhere. They spend days debating and pushing bills to defund the abortion mills, to stop amnesty, and to eliminate Obamacare, but these bills go nowhere because the Republicans make them standalone pieces of legislation that require 60 votes in the Senate (which they never get).
If Republicans were serious, they would pass these bills as amendments to budget legislation, or must-pass legislation to raise the debt ceiling, which could be done in the Senate with only 51 votes. And Obama would have a hard time vetoing them because then he, Obama, would be responsible for shutting down the government.
But Republicans don't do that, so Warren is right that they are wasting their time.
"So what have Republicans done over the past six months to try to make families a little more secure, to give people a fighting chance? What have they done?"
Nothing. Spot on, Warren!
After making the case for her favored policies, the Massachusetts Democrat suggested Republicans were not pursuing such proposals because they were too busy helping lobbyists, oil companies, bankers and other wealthy, well-connected interests.
Very true! They're busy funding the Export-Import Bank, pretending to oppose the Iran deal but secretly supporting it because of business interests, and supporting amnesty for illegals because again, that is what big business wants. And by the way, Warren also knows something about the big business interests of which she speaks, since she also voted to reauthorized the Ex-Im Bank.
Of course, Warren is criticizing the GOP from the perspective of one who wants them to impose even more state control over the economy. But her analysis is 100% accurate when she talks about how Republicans are wasting time doing nothing. If only other Republicans besides Ted Cruz and Mike Lee would start to say the same.
