Debbie does Democrats
Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), finally gets it. Unfairly mocked because she couldn't explain the difference between Democrats and Socialists, she does appear to know the difference between a good Iran deal and a bad one. And she realizes that President Obama (D)'s and Secretary of State John Kerry's deal is bad, very bad. And so, perhaps bravely placing her chairship on the line and also risking the wrath of the president, but not her conscience and the feelings of many of her constituents, according to the Washington Post, she "prevented consideration of a resolution at the party’s summer meeting here that praised President Obama and offered backing for the nuclear agreement with Iran."
The resolution was drafted with the intention of putting the national committee on record in support of the agreement as Congress prepares to take up the issue when members return from their August recess. (snip)
A party spokeswoman and said procedural issues prevented the proposed resolution from being considered. She did not directly address Wasserman Schultz’s role in the decision-making. Other Democrats said that it was congresswoman’s direct opposition that blocked its consideration. (snip)
Some Democrats on the national committee who were unhappy that the resolution did not come up for consideration said that, as DNC chair, Wasserman Schultz owed her allegiance in this instance to the president, regardless of her own local political considerations.
Public consideration of the resolution at the DNC meeting, however, could have prompted a contentious public debate within the party just as the president is looking to consolidate Democrats behind the agreement, a factor that was noted in a Buzz Feed story about the way events unfolded here.
However, James Zogby, co chair of the DNC's Resolution Committee, did offer a substitute letter of support for both President Obama (D) and the Iran agreement which a majority of the DNC members signed. And apparently mostly every Democrat present at the meeting was happy at the compromise.
Well, okay, not every Democrat is happy with DWS's actions. Some want her removed as chair of the DNC and have posted a petition on the White House petition site to that effect in addition to another one at the president's own organization site, MoveOn. Obviously the Democrats are having trouble accepting diversity, pluralism, and multiculturalism in their increasingly small and exclusive tent.
Oh, and BTW, why did I state that Rep. Wasserman Schultz was unfairly mocked for being unable to explain the difference between Democrats and Socialists? Because, except for some minor, subtle. and totally irrelevant nuances, there are no differences. Those who actually believe there are differences are the ones who should be mocked. And that is why Senator Bernie Sanders (Socialist-Vermont) is so at ease working with the Democrats in Congress and why they feel so comfortable with him and why there are no major Democratic big brass complaints about a Socialist candidate aspiring to be the Democratic nominee for president. Really, except for gender, are Hillary's and Bernie's policies that different?
Oh, and BTW again, don't mock DWS for her naturally curly hair, as I really love, love it and am so glad she keeps it that way. It is the only real aspect of the Democrats.
