Study: Health benefits of medical marijuana found to be wildly oversold

A new study has come out studying the medicinal benefits of pot:

Twenty-three states and Washington, D.C. have laws permitting medical marijuana use. Medical marijuana has not been proven to work for many illnesses that state laws have approved it for, according to the first comprehensive analysis of research on its potential benefits.

The strongest evidence is for chronic pain and for muscle stiffness in multiple sclerosis, according to the review, which evaluated 79 studies involving more than 6,000 patients. Evidence was weak for many other conditions, including anxiety, sleep disorders, and Tourette's syndrome and the authors recommend more research. An editorial in the journal says approval in many states has been based on poor quality studies, patients' testimonials or other nonscientific evidence.

I find this very hard to believe! Twenty three states wouldn't approve marijuana for medical use if it didn't have some medical benefit! Maybe they're not looking at the right "benefits":

1) It helps anorexics and picky eaters.

2) It helps people cope with excessive calmness and overwhelming feelings of harmony.

3) It can help reduce sex drive, a useful treatment for nymphomaniacs..

4) It can help make foreign films, art exhibits, and museum lectures more bearable.

Do you think these disclosures about marijuana will cause states to change their laws to revoke its use for medicinal purposes? Or do you think that instead states will conduct long-term 20 year studies with large populations of 50,000 or more pot users to more conclusively determine the benefits of marijuana?

I also like how even while these states legalize marijuana, it's still illegal under federal law, but Obama ordered the Justice Department not to prosecute it (it's perfectly legal--it's "prosecutorial discretion"!). Obama always tells us what to eat or drink; if he's not enforcing the pot laws, there must be some benefit to it, right?

And I think we're just scratching the surface with pot. If marijuana has medicinal effects, why not cocaine? You may laugh, but would you really be surprised one day to read that California has legalized "medicinal cocaine"? I wouldn't.

And what about medicinal heroin? And what about medicinal crystal meth? Do you think it can help people lose unwanted weight in their face, and help people who want to make their teeth more prominent when they smile?
