Filmmaker apologizes for casting white in minority role
A filmmaker has apologized for casting a white actress in a part-Asian, part-Caucasian role.
Prospects for Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone’s new film “Aloha,” brought to you by the fading Hollywood darling Cameron Crowe (“Almost Famous,” “Jerry Maguire”), have long looked dim.
The film was already deemed a flop at the box office after a lackluster opening over the weekend, and its woes increased when critics began piling on Mr. Crowe’s decision to cast Ms. [Emma] Stone as an Asian-American character named Allison Ng. In the film she explains that she’s one-quarter Chinese and one-quarter Hawaiian.
The filmmaker then posted this apology:
Allison Ng is part Hawaiian, [the filmmaker Cameron Crowe] wrote, yet at the heart of her character was her frustration that “she looked nothing like one.” Ms. Stone exhaustively researched the role, Mr. Crowe continued, adding that it was based on a real person. “If any of her fine characterization has caused consternation and controversy,” he wrote, “I am the one to blame.”
How nice of him to apologize! Now, where is the apology from Disney for casting a black woman as Obi-Wan Kenobi's daughter? And where's the apology for the minority actress who played Little Orphan Annie? You can find a long list of other roles here where established Caucasian characters were recast to be played by minority actors.
But you won't find any apologies for any of those castings. When a minority takes the place of an established white character, that's "progressive" and "inclusive." It fosters "diversity." In the very rare instance when a white person takes a minority role, that calls for apologies.
My personal opinion is that if you have a long-established character who is white or black, man or woman, the same kind of person should be cast, so the character is more readily recognizable, and for the purposes of maintaining continuity. I think it's fine to have minority actors, but why can't new roles be created for them that will be just as compelling?
Do you think we will ever see the day when people A and B are treated the same for doing the exact same things, even if A and B are of completely different races?
