Kansas becomes safer with concealed carry law
Kansas is about to become a much safer place to live and do business since Governor Sam Brownback signed a concealed carry law.
The new law, which kicks in July 1, makes Kansas the sixth state to allow “constitutional carry.” It will allow Kansans 21 and older to carry concealed firearms regardless of whether they have obtained a permit. Training still will be required for anyone who wants to carry a concealed gun in the 36 states that accept Kansas permits.
Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau, a Wichita Democrat, said she has concerns about safety, noting that law enforcement officials raised concerns about the lack of training. “That’s a major responsibility to carry a gun, whether it’s concealed or not. And it’s scary,” Faust-Goudeau said. “I predict from the legislation that — and it’s going to go quick, it’s going to be July 1 — we’re going to see some accidents, possibly deaths.”
I predict that if a single person misuses a gun in Kansas, we will immediately see pressure put on the legislature to cancel the law.
Guns are like cars; they can be used for good or bad purposes. Sometimes people get injured or die in car accidents, but we accept that because of the greater good provided by the use of cars. People can use guns to hurt others, but people can also use guns to save others' lives.
There are background checks and training required to get a gun license. But still, no system is perfect, and one crazy person may go off with a gun and shoot people. But a couple of things to note here:
1) The law doesn't expand the pool of people who may carry guns; it just expands where they may carry their guns.
2) If a crazy person takes a gun and starts shooting people, after July 1, there's a good chance that law-abiding citizens can shoot back. Massacres occur in almost every country in the Western world except Israel, because in Israel, a substantial portion of the population carries guns. A crazed gunman might be able to kill one or two people, but if the population is law-abiding, a population carrying guns makes everyone safer. The police can't be everywhere at once, and by the time they arrive, a crazed maniac can massacre a bunch of unarmed citizens. That's why we're actually safer with an armed citizenry.
3) Furthermore, criminals will think twice about committing armed robberies and murder and assault if they know that some fraction of the law-abiding population is armed. And the great thing about concealed carry is that you never know who might be carrying a weapon. Criminals hate uncertainty, so in a concealed carry population, they can be deterred even if their victim isn't actually carrying a gun.
But this goes against the concept of total state control that the left prefers. The only decisions they want you to have for yourself are birth control, abortion, and lately so-called sex change operations (actually mutilations). I prefer having all my constitutional freedoms, and I predict that Kansas is about to become a much safer place
