According to Rep. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Republicans who oppose Loretta Lynch are asking her to “sit in the back of the bus”:

“This is the first African-American woman in the history of the United States to be nominated to serve as attorney general. It is a civil rights milestone that her name has been submitted,”

He further accused the senate GOP of targeting Lynch:

“GOP Leadership has decided to “target this good woman” and “stop her from serving as the first female African-American attorney general” saying Republicans have “no good reason” to delay her confirmation

“That is unfair. It’s unjust. it is beneath the decorum and dignity of the United States Senate,” he added.

Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) claimed that race and gender  play a part in the battle over Loretta Lynch’s confirmation. However, these two elected officials appear to have forgotten how the Democrats treated Condoleezza Rice  and  Janice Rodgers Brown (both women Sen. Durbin voted against), both black females. Therefore, I guess it was not beneath the decorum and dignity of the United States Senate when some Democrats did not approve of Rice (although she too was the first African-American female to be nominated for her position as Secretary of State) and Rodgers. President George W. Bush nominated Janice Rodgers Brown to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 2003. She did not began serving as a federal appellate court judge until June 8, 2005 due to her nomination being stalled in the U.S. Senate for almost two years because of Democratic opposition. Did race and gender play a role in the Democrats opposition to these intelligent black women? Were Democrats waging a war on women?
