Hillary's scandals - deja vu all over again
Hillary Clinton is not even officially running for president, yet we are being treated to a preview of what her campaign and potential presidency might look like. In just the past few weeks, she finds herself in the middle of two scandals. First it was pay-to-play money (contributions) from foreign governments, some of which are hostile to American interests. Second was the e-mail scandal, dominating this week’s headlines.
To quote Yogi Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”
Millennials weren’t alive or were too young to remember the Clinton scandals during Bill Clinton’s presidency. As history is known to repeat itself, this is a good time to quickly review the cesspool of Clinton controversies.
There was the Whitewater real estate deal with Jim and Susan McDougal. Loans were made, under pressure by then-governor Bill Clinton. The McDougal-owned Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan went under. Jim Guy Tucker, Clinton’s successor as governor, went to jail for his role in Whitewater. Bill and Hillary skated.
Clinton confidant and Hillary’s law partner Vince Foster was found dead in Fort Marcy Park, under mysterious circumstances. Another Hillary partner at the Rose Law Firm, Web Hubbell, was sent to prison for billing fraud.
The common thread in these scandals was fraudulent billing and other shady deals. The NY Times in 1996 observed, “After nearly two years of searches and subpoenas, the White House said this evening that it had unexpectedly discovered copies of missing documents from Hillary Rodham Clinton's law firm that describe her work for a failing savings and loan association in the 1980's.”
Fast-forward to 2015. Substitute “e-mails” for “documents” and “State Department” for “law firm,” and it’s déjà vu all over again.
Let’s not forget Bill Clinton’s women. Monica Lewinsky, Kathleen Willey, Sally Perdue, Jennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Elizabeth Gracen, and Juanita Broaddrick. And the Arkansas State Troopers who acted as Bill Clinton’s pimps. Remember the “bimbo eruption team” created to contain the next Bubba-gal to come forward? Hillary at the time blamed it all on a “vast right-wing conspiracy.”
Fast-forward to 2015. Bill is palling around with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, taking junkets on Epstein’s “Lolita express” private jet. Clinton apologist James Carville is spewing the same 1990s excuses, “right-wing talking points.” Déjà vu all over again.
Lastly, remember how the Clinton administration collected campaign contributions from the Chinese government? A string of memorable characters served as conduits of illegal contributions – Charlie Trie, Johnny Chung, John Huang, and James Riady.
Fast-forward to 2015, with the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation receiving contributions from such staunch U.S. allies as Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman. While Mrs. Clinton served as secretary of state and potential future president. Unseemly enough that even the Washington Post took notice: “Rarely, if ever, has a potential commander in chief been so closely associated with an organization that has solicited financial support from foreign governments.” Déjà vu all over again.
Turn on the news this week, and it’s the 1990s again. Clinton apologists James Carville, Joe Trippi, and Lanny Davis, excusing, denying, and blaming. Another déjà vu.
Hillary is not yet even the Democrat nominee, and we are reliving the 1990s. Scandals, excuses, and blame. Every week another revelation. Distracting from the important issues facing the nation and the next commander-in-chief. Fair warning to those who don’t remember the 1990s: with the Clintons back in the White House, it will be déjà vu all over again.
