De Blasio's wife wore jeans to Officer Liu's funeral

Mayor de Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray, managed to dress up for the royal couple’s visit in October and for former Governor Mario Cuomo’s funeral this week, so why did she wear jeans to slain police officer Wenjian Liu’s funeral?

McCray's unconventional apparel caused a commotion on social media.  Many suggested she was showing contempt for cops with the casual look.  After McCray's chief of staff, Rachel Noerdlinger, had to resign in November amidst revelations that her long-time felon boyfriend called cops "pigs" and was arrested for almost running down a New Jersey police officer, McCray’s choice of dress does seem odd.

A female officer attending Liu's funeral called the faux jean look "disrespectful."

On Wednesday, McCray's favorite designer, Anni  Kuan, defended the mayor's wife, saying the "polished and elegant" zip-up pants  may resemble  jeans in the photo but are actually a polyester-rayon-blend dark pantsuit.

Considering the animosity between Mayor de Blasio and the New York Police Department, you'd think McCray would have attended the solemn occasion in non-controversial attire.  Was this a passive-aggressive, in-your-face gesture in retaliation for hundreds of police officers turning their backs on de Blasio when he spoke at Liu's partner's funeral the week before?

As a member of a 1970s black feminist socialist group advocating the "destruction of the political economic systems of capitalism and imperialism as well as patriarchy," McCray knows how to make the personal political using any means necessary.  The "First Lady of New York" can’t exactly pump a fist in the air at a funeral for a slain police officer.  Why not show solidarity with the anti-cop activists by wearing bunched-up jeans meant more for apple-picking than a solemn tribute to one of New York’s finest?
