Guess who's Goddard College's Commencement Speaker?

How sick is this?

Monday evening I was a guest on Barry Farber’s internet radio program.

We spoke about the “workplace beheading” in Oklahoma (which I also commented on in American Thinker on Tuesday).

I told Barry it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Alton Alexander Nolen, aka Jah’Keem Yisrael, the knife-wielding, decapitating convert to “the religion of peace”, wound up painted by the revisionist, propagandist Mainstream Media as a “victim”, and his critics as “Islamophobic bigots”.

I cynically (and only semi-sarcastically) predicted that he would be not only defended, but fawned over and lionized, in the manner that brutal murderers such as Mumia Abu-Jamal have been defended, fawned over and lionized by the likes of the late attorney William Kunstler, and the Hollywood Left.

Unlike the family of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner (brutally executed by Mumia Abu-Jamal), and others who, since 1981, cannot but remember, I don’t think of Mumia Abu-Jamal very often; his name only came up as I sought another horrific slaying (coincidentally committed by another Muslim convert) to illustrate my cynical prediction about Jah’Keem Yisrael.

But what should greet my eyes Tuesday morning but the very same Mr. Abu-Jamal back in the news! It seems that the celebrated cop-killer (serving a sentence of life without parole) has been selected to give the commencement address at Vermont’s Goddard College!

From www.philly.com:

The college says it holds 20 commencement ceremonies each year so students in each degree program can have personalized graduations.

"As a reflection of Goddard’s individualized and transformational educational model, our commencements are intimate affairs where each student serves as her or his own valedictorian, and each class chooses its own speaker," Goddard College Interim President Bob Kenny said in a statement. "Choosing Mumia as their commencement speaker, to me, shows how this newest group of Goddard graduates expresses their freedom to engage and think radically and critically in a world that often sets up barriers to do just that."

Goddard said Abu-Jamal received a bachelor of arts degree from the college in 1996. He completed this coursework there by mail, according to the Burlington Free Press.

Abu-Jamal has given commencement speeches at other colleges. Both his 1999 speech to graduates of Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., and 2000 address for Antioch College's commencement in Yellow Springs, Ohio, sparked outrage and protests from police officers, prosecutors, and Faulkner's family.

Ah, Yes, isn’t it wonderful that the graduating students at Goddard have “the freedom to engage and think radically and critically in a world that often sets up barriers to do just that”?

After all, it’s just we hidebound, old-fashioned, mean-spirited (and probably racist) relics of the Twentieth Century who set up those “barriers” by holding onto the notion (rooted in what we used to call “morality”) that unrepentant convicted cop-killers are somehow not suitable speakers at college commencement ceremonies.

So perhaps it’s also not so outrageous to suggest that someday Mr. Jah-Keem Yisrael (should he somehow escape Oklahoma’s death penalty) will also be selected to address the graduating class at Goddard. Except that I will probably not be around to see it, and Goddard College will, no doubt, have by then been renamed the Goddard Madrassa.

As a contemporary of Barry Farber (and a fellow Conservative Talk Radio icon), the late Bob Grant, would say, “It’s sick out there, and getting sicker!”
