Vote fraud investigation roils Georgia Senate race

Voting fraud doesn’t exist, according to the Democrats, who fight tooth and nail against measures intended to make it difficult to accomplish. But that hasn’t stopped the Secretary of State’s office in Georgia from launching a major fraud investigation that targets a group closely tied to the campaign of the Democrat nominee for Senate there. Alexandra Jaffe of The Hill:

Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R) said in a memo, reported by WSB-TV, that his office has “received numerous complaints about voter applications submitted by the New Georgia Project,” an organization launched to register and turn out voters to the polls.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed significant illegal activities, including forged voter registration applications, forged signatures on releases, and applications with false or inaccurate information,” Kemp wrote in the memo. (snip)

The New Georgia Project and its parent organization, Third Sector Development, were issued subpoenas this week demanding documents relating to the allegations be turned over to the Georgia Election Board by Sept. 19.

Third Sector Development is run by Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams (D), who has contributed to [Michele] Nunn’s campaign and was listed on an official campaign strategy document as a proposed member of a group of potential policy advisers.

Nunn is running in a tight race against GOP nominee David Perdue to replace retiring incumbent Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss. George offers one of very few opportunities for Democrats to pick up a GOP Senate seat, as they battle to maintain control of the upper chamber of Congress.

If vote fraud is all but nonexistent, the Democrats have little to fear in this investigation. But the Perdue campaign is furious:

“The fact that an organization led by a well-known Nunn supporter would attempt to illegally register voters is unacceptable and reminiscent of the Obama-political machine’s ACORN scandal. There is nothing more fundamental to our democratic process than maintaining the integrity of our elections and any attempt to tamper with them is deplorable.”

Armed with subpoena power, let the Secretary of State move quickly to uncover the truth.
