In light of recent developments relative to what now, everyone agrees, was a terrorist attack on the CIA compound in Benghazi, Libya on 9/11/2012; the Ben Rhodes “smoking gun” memo and the Tommy “surfer boy” Vietor interview with Bret Baier on Fox News, it’s understandable that those who have been clamoring for accountability from either President Obama and/or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be at least encouraged, if not outright giddy.

At the risk of raining on this parade, I would caution against any premature celebration. The Obama administration, with their well-documented incestuous media relationships, has mastered “controlling the message” like no American administration before them, claims to being “the most transparent administration in history” notwithstanding. Only the “Clinton Machine” could hope to place a close second.

This being the case, the timing of these bombshells is worth questioning. Why would they even allow Vietor to go on Fox News now? The administration has succeeded in keeping the details of what happened in Benghazi and the ensuing political circus in Washington D.C. that followed under wraps as long as possible. They by now must know that most of this information will eventually see the light of day and I suspect have made the political calculation, (do they ever do anything for any other reason?) that now is the optimal time to let nature take its course. Hillary is no longer at State but as yet, has not announced for 2016 and Obama, for reasons outside the scope of this submission, remains untouchable. They see the handwriting on the wall for the 2014 midterms and must be expecting the worst while trying publicly to put a happy face on it and hoping for the best. 

In the interests of Obama and his legacy and Hillary and the party’s future, now is the time to get this over with and put it firmly in their rear view mirrors. They know their media lackeys will continue to whitewash the whole affair as a partisan witch hunt, a Fox News obsession and a “vast right-wing conspiracy,” regardless of the facts that emerge.  There will be phony apologies, only fitting for a “phony scandal” and lambs will be sacrificed on the progressive altar; Rhodes and Vietor likely among them. And that will be that. All will be forgotten by the time the 2016 race begins to percolate. As far as Democrats and the media are concerned, the chapter on Benghazi will have been closed, the guilty charged and punished, and the blood stains of Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods long since cleansed from the hands of both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
