Destroying the Canard

A battle rages within the ranks of the GOP. Who are we, and what do we believe?

While many opinions exist, and if you asked 100 respondents, you would get 100 different opinions, there exist today two primary camps. Conservatives and Moderates, affectionately referred to as RINOs.

Conservatives, generally speaking, believe in limited government, Laissez-Faire capitalism, and low taxation. Many Conservatives, referred to as Social Conservatives, maintain that we can't put our fiscal house in order while depravity exists within the culture.

Moderates believe in, well, whatever will get them elected. They don’t hold to a particular set of principles, beyond trying to straddle the line between maintaining a belief system, and adjusting said belief system, as cultural events on the ground dictate a change in the wind direction. Take same-sex marriage, for instance. A handful of years ago, self-described Moderates were comfortable opposing this phenomenon. They, as President Obama, have evolved in recent months, as it has become chic to support it.

Many in this camp will describe themselves as Fiscal Conservative – Socially Liberal, sometimes defined as a Libertarian. They claim to oppose profligate spending, and big-government statism, while maintaining a laissez-faire attitude towards social & cultural issues (abortion, same-sex marriage, marijuana, etc).

Recent events have destroyed this position, and the self-described Fiscal Conservative – Social Liberal will have to make a choice. Are you Conservative, or are you Liberal?

While it may have been perceived as “enlightened” to want to rein in our fiscal profligacy, but live and let live on social and cultural issues, the Left has made clear that there can be no middle ground.

The Socially-Liberal [Far]-Left cannot abide, and seemingly will not allow opinions that differ from their own. Through activism and legislation, sycophantic media, academia, business, and even infiltration of the Church, they will demand concurrence, with their viewpoint. You vill comply, or re-education camp for you!

This is a battle that, as a self-described Fiscal and Social Conservative, I am wholly prepared to fight.

Again, I’ve arrived at, and maintain my worldview through reason and analysis. While I can be flexible on “some issues”, I cannot, and will not bend on my values. For, what is a man who gains the world, but loses his soul. (Mark 8:36)

The far left is dug in, and seemingly prepared to fight this battle as well.

Which brings us back to the Fiscal Conservative – Social Liberal Moderate. Seeing the Left prepared to destroy anyone who doesn’t comport to their cultural worldview (Chick-Fil-A, Phil Robertson, Brendan Eich, the Benham brothers, etc.), you must understand that they (the Left) are prepared to go nuclear. You may not believe in, nor should you be required to, believe in the social/cultural worldview of your Social Conservative brethren, but you cannot stand by and watch the battle from the sidelines.

You may think that you’re taking an “enlightened” attitude towards these social/cultural issues by straddling the middle, but understand this: as the Left goes nuclear to defeat the Social Conservative, they will have no compunction against attacking you, when the winds of change blow in a wholly different direction. You will be asked to evolve again.

To paraphrase Niemöller -- First they came for the Social Conservatives.
