Rahm Emanuel puts some daylight between himself and ObamaCare
Here’s where it starts to get fun for conservatives. The sinking ship of ObamaCare is causing the more ambitious Democrats to scurry away as fast as they think they can get away with it. Rahm Emanuel, former Obama White House chief-of-staff (who left after reportedly clashing with Valerie Jarrett) and currently ‘da mare’ of Chicago, is backing away from any responsibility for the biggest domestic policy disaster in the history of the Democratic Party. Warner Todd Huston writes at Breitbart:
Joining a long line of Democrats distancing themselves from Obamacare, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel hinted that he didn't support the President's original plans for the healthcare take over and advised the President to take a different approach, though he shied from saying just what that meant.
In a March 27 interview on cable business network CNBC, Emanuel claimed that he offered the President a "contrary opinion" on Obamacare but his advice was not heeded.
"He asked for my opinion," Emanuel said during an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box. "I gave it to him and why I thought we should do something slightly different."
Emanuel, who was President Obama's chief of staff during the 2008-09 debate over Obamacare, refused to elaborate on just what his plan would have looked like. Instead he fell into rote praise of Obama and his healthcare scheme.
Well, it’s tricky slipping the stiletto in while not seeming to be another Brutus, so a little pro forma Obama worship is in order. And for heaven’s sake, stay away from any specifics that might come back to haunt yourself. In this case, shipping dead fish to Valerie is not an option. Rahm has never been known for subtlety, but having been in the Obama White House himself, he is aware of the sheer media power that even still adheres to the One We Were Waiting For. And living in Chicago where Clout is more valuable than gold, he knows that as the halo tarnishes more, there will eventually be opportunities to bring a gun to the knife fight. All in good time.
Probably the most important consequence of this move is the signal it sends to other Democrats. Rahm is much smarter than the run of the mill opportunists and demagogues that staff the political machine, and so when he makes his move, others pay attention and start wondering how much time is left until the Titanic’s bow tilts down and it is too late to jump off.
