ACLU Official Blasts Marathon Bombing Case Investigation

There's not much that doesn't outrage the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), whether it's the "not guilty" verdict in the George Zimmerman trial or America's continued reluctance to shed its Christian heritage.

In Boston, however, the ACLU seems to have a special knack for eyebrow-raising stances.

Take ACLU of Massachusetts board member Nancy Ryan. According to the Boston Herald, Ms. Ryan is incensed that the FBI has been questioning classmates of a man charged with lying to investigators in the probe of the Boston Marathon bombing.

The man charged with lying is Robel Phillipos, a friend of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who, with his brother Tamerlan, are accused of planting nail-packed pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the 117th running of the Boston Marathon on April 15. Tamerlan was killed on April 19 during a police chase. Dzhokhar and Tamerlan are also accused of killing an MIT policeman and wounding a Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority guard.

Dzhokhar told an interviewer that he and his brother were motivated by radical Islam and that they had planned to do another bombing in Times Square. Recently, he has made the news because of the male model-like photo of him appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine - a cover that has triggered boycotts.

"Prosecutors say Phillipos, who was ordered to home confinement, initially lied to investigators about visiting Tsarnaev's UMass Dartmouth dorm three days after the bombing, but later admitted  he visited the room with two other classmates, Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov," the Herald reports. "Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov are charged with obstruction of justice for disposing of [a]bag, which was found in a New Bedford landfill."

As part of the investigation of the April 15 terror bombing, which left three dead, more than 260 injured, and many runners and spectators losing limbs, the FBI has been questioning Phillipos' classmates at Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School.

To ACLU board member Ryan, who reportedly knows Phillipos' mother, this is a "dragnet."  To which, victims' families might well ask, "So?"

"It seems like almost all of the class of 2011 has been contacted in one way or another by the FBI," Ryan told the Herald. "We've been making sure that anyone that we hear about knows that they have the right to have a lawyer."

Which raises the question why ACLU's Ms.Ryan, who filed an affidavit supporting Phillipos, has a problem with the authorities searching for the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
