Obama's girlfriend 'compression'
This whole "compression" thing has me bothered.
In response to being caught in a published lie about his past dating life, the President offered a seemingly erudite and acceptable rationalization. Specifically,
Obama has now told biographer David Maraniss that the 'New York girlfriend' was actually a composite character, based off of multiple girlfriends he had both in New York City and in Chicago ... Though Dreams From My Father is an autobiography, and hence non-fiction, Obama makes no mention of this "compression," nor is there any note by the publisher, Broadway Books. In fact, Obama only acknowledged the "compression" after Maraniss learned that Cook had no recollection of some of the events at which Obama said she was present.
Ah, "compression," must be just another really smart thing I don't know. Except, I checked six online dictionaries and Wikipedia for literary devices, and found no such use of the word -- probably just the wrong dictionaries.
No matter, even if it is a valid, albeit effete, literary pose; what a questionable choice of word it is. Normal folks compress air and possibly even natural gas. Writers may compress concepts, but there's something off about compressing people, even if only in a literary sense. Shouldn't humans be exempt?
Admittedly these were only girlfriends, but it is odd that Obama deemed them both sufficiently useful to include and insufficiently valuable to ascribe separate existence. The same principle could be applied to business partners, prior wives, brothers, sisters, etc.... Just "compress" them, being literary and all.
Nonetheless, we should report that a literary murder has been committed.
Can you imagine writing your life story and combining friends into some engineered built-to-suit android? Barack Obama's liberal secular humanism has lost the human. The purported caring social justice of the liberal seems to disappear at the individual level, and that's the only level that matters. Refusing to grant girlfriends the dignity of separate mention shares something with compressing a few fetuses into one birth. In today's liberal utilitarian vernacular, that fetus compression is called "selective reduction."
It is a teaching moment to see regard for human dignity disappear so quickly when the liberal's focus turns so self-servingly internal. There is a distinct and cold lack of love in "compressions," as they are just tools designed to keep us all revolving around the same selfish sun, Barack Obama.
Apparently the President is who he tells us he is, a man with one girlfriend, not who he really is. We are all on a need to know basis, for the greater glory of Barack Obama.
