ACLU Promotes Christian-Bashing Speaker
The ACLU of Oregon gave a prominent platform in March to sex-advice columnist and "anti-bullying" advocate Dan Savage, who bashed the Bible and Christian teens in a profanity-laced speech on April 13 in Seattle.
"Savage was supposed to be delivering a speech about anti-bullying at the National High School Journalism Conference sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association," Fox News reported. "But it turned into an episode of Christian-bashing."
A Youtube video of Savage shows him repeatedly mocking the Bible as Christian students walk up the aisle to exit the event. The self-styled, anti-bullying expert who created the "It Gets Better" anti-suicide media campaign that encourages students to identify as homosexual, then mocks the Christian students, calling them "pansy-assed."
"This speech I thought was going to be about anti-bullying, and what we got was a vulgar, profanity-laced attack on Christians," said Rick Tuttle, journalism adviser for the Sutter Union High School in Southern California. "Many were highly offended, to the point where they wanted to leave. ... So they took a stand, and you know what, this is what we teach kids to do when they're bullied - to walk away, and that's what they did. And when they got outside the convention center, he was basically still lobbying insults at them."
Savage, whose "Savage Love" advice columns promote sex and promiscuity of every sort, and who was featured at a White House conference on bullying in March 2011, issued an apology of sorts on his blog on April 29, while repeating his characterization of the Bible.
In 2000, Savage boasted of licking door knobs at then-presidential candidate Gary Bauer's campaign office in an attempt to give Bauer the flu. He also recently created a website that obscenely redefines former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum's name.
The ACLU of Maryland in September 2010 co-sponsored a seminar featuring Savage on a panel discussing "marriage as a civil right."
In promoting its March 2012 dinner with Savage, the ACLU of Oregon called him "a household name" and featured a "hosted reception" with event sponsors. The group's website said (emphasis in original):
"Join the board and staff of the ACLU of Oregon, along with hundreds of other civil liberty supporters, as we celebrate our accomplishments of the past year. Help us raise much-needed funds to support education, lobbying and litigation on key civil rights issues for the coming year. Together, it gets better!"
Unless you're a Christian student, that is.
