Projection

Years ago my parents lived in the Texas hill country on a beautiful ranch. Cattle ranching is not ever profitable, so most ranchers supplement their incomes by leasing out the land during hunting season for both bird and deer hunts. One hunting season, a neighbor rancher, new in the area, drove over and after chatting with my Dad for awhile, got to the point of finally accusing him of cutting his fences in places so as to allow our lease hunters to enter on his land to hunt, illegally. My father, a man of great integrity had already found the places during his daily rides of the perimeter of the ranch. He knew clearly that the way the fence wire was bent that the cutting was actually coming from the other rancher's side, and in fact, the newly arrived rancher was actually cutting the wire himself to allow his hunters on our place.

My father explained that not only had he witnessed the act with his binoculars he knew that anyone who protested too much probably had intentions that did not match his given concerns. That rancher did not last long, as his credibility met with factual truth that he could not deny. My father told him where he was when he witnessed his irresponsible behavior. He left shame faced and shortly later sold his ranch.

Watching our controlling Democratic Congress pass a bill that is clearly against the will of a majority of the American public has been a singularly grueling experience, as most of us feel our will is being thwarted. Tens of thousands poured into the nation's capitol last weekend to allow Congress to see our will on display. By virtue of the types of folks coming to these gatherings, the group as a whole is respectful of the hallowed place they are in and few leave trash. There have been no arrests of Tea Partiers, at least at the hands of the Park Service, indeed the Park Service has commented that at these gathering, protestors have been well behaved, mannerly, and left little trash. It is doubtful that any other group coming to protest has ever been so well mannered.

Last weekend proved to be discouraging for many Americans. It was interesting to note certain Congressmen deliberately parading and flaunting themselves before the crowds while walking to the legislative floor. For most Americans this appeared to be baiting the gathered and designed to fire the flames of unrest, yet, there are no videos or audios of anything to support these claims. Yet, we hear from the Democrats a belligerent claim that they have been vilified and demeaned and threatened. But where is the proof of such behaviors?

All this missing evidence of intimidation or threat makes me wonder if we have another case of projection, someone claiming something never done. Rush Limbaugh noted some years ago that Democrats often project onto us the behaviors they do themselves. I think this group protests too much about threats and alleged intimidation. In fact, I think they are acting a bit like the new rancher next to us, years ago, who was actually cutting the fence wire himself and then accusing my Dad of injuring his hunting.

All this could be put to rest if we could see all those allegations backed up by something other than hot air. Put up or shut up, Congress. You know you are in trouble with us voters in November, but it is ballot box trouble, not physical harm. Unless, that is you ever visit my ranch, and then I might introduce you to a tool we use on cattle in the pen who won't behave wisely. The tool is called a cattle prod and a few jolts of that might clear your minds.
