'Instructor' at Fort Hood has ties to terror financing group

Andrew McCarthy at NRO has ferreted out this incredible story about an instructor the Pentagon sent to Fort Hood to teach our soldiers about Islam who has ties to the notorious terrorist financing outfit ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) - an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial.

It's been brought to my attention by several reliable sources that the Defense Department has brought Louay Safi to Fort Hood as an instructor, and that he has been lecturing on Islam to our troops in Fort Hood who are about to deploy to Afghanistan. Safi is a top official of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), and served as research director at the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT).

Worse, last evening, Safi was apparently permitted to present a check (evidently on behalf of ISNA) to the families of the victims of last month's Fort Hood massacre. A military source told the blogger Barbarossa at the Jawa Report: "This is nothing short of blood money. This is criminal and the Ft. Hood base commander should be fired right now."

Who is ISNA?

ISNA was identified by the Justice Department at the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing conspiracy trial as an unindicted co-conspirator. The defendants at that trial were convicted of funding Hamas to the tune of millions of dollars. This should have come as no surprise. ISNA is the Muslim Brotherhood's umbrella entity for Islamist organizations in the United States. It was established in 1981 to enable Muslims in North America "to adopt Islam as a complete way of life" - i.e., to further the Brotherhood's strategy of establishing enclaves in the West that are governed by sharia.

Who is Louay Safi? Barbarossa at The Jawa Report explains:

He has long been on the radar of federal law enforcement. Back in 2003, Safi was named in a FBI affidavit submitted to the court that approved a search warrant of the now-closed Graduate School of Islamic Social Sciences, which trained and approved the initial Muslim military chaplains.

A glimpse of his connections to Islamic terrorists operating inside the US can be seen in a phone conversation recorded by the FBI he had with Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader Sami al-Arian. The Investigative Project describes the call:

In a recorded 1995 telephone call, Al-Arian and Louay Safi discuss President Clinton's new executive order prohibiting financial transactions with terrorist groups including the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Safi, an officer with the Islamic Society of North America and the International Institute of Islamic Thought (currently undergoing its own investigation for terrorist financing and ties to the Muslim Brotherhood), wanted to know if this affected Al-Arian.

Al-Arian dismissed the order as empty political posturing:

Al-Arian: By God the Almighty, when he lists names like Abu Nidal and Fathi Shiqaqi and Ahmad Yassin ... Does Ahmad Yassin have accounts here? What is this nonsense?

Safi: He just wants to please them.

Al-Arian: Of course.

Safi: Nobody understands these things in America.

Al-Arian: True, people don't understand anything. They don't understand anything.

Incredible. This guy is instructing our troops? If he had any contact with Hasan...fill in the blanks.

Emerson concludes:

If you want to get a sense of the garbage our troops are being forced to endure in Fort Hood's classrooms, check out Jihad Watch, where my friend Bob Spencer has more on this episode and on his prior jousts with Safi, here , here and here .

What on earth is this government doing, and will Congress please do something about it?

Emerson is dreaming if he thinks Congress will touch this story. The administration will pull their executive privilege rabbit out of the hat and refuse to cooperate. But you wonder if the FBI or the military has even interviewed Mr. Safi and tried to find out if Hasan made contact with him.
