A second "Miracle of the Oil" this Hanukah season

Miracles come in many sizes.

This week, Jews around the world are celebrating that more than two thousand years ago a ragtag guerilla army led by Judah Maccabee revolted against the numerically superior fighting machine of Antiochus IV. Hopelessly outnumbered, these Jewish heroes prevailed and drove the mighty Greco-Syrian occupiers forever out of Judea. The Jewish victory over the Greco-Syrians was a miracle.

Upon liberating Jerusalem, the victorious Jews cleansed and rededicated their Holy Temple. They rekindled the Holy Menorah, but there was only enough oil for one day, yet, the oil burned for eight days; Hanukah's "miracle of the oil."

Today there is a "modern-day miracle of the oil" that, for the most part, goes unrecognized and unappreciated. An invisible hand once saw to it that the remains of living creatures over the course of millions of years miraculously morphed into an energy source, a reachable energy source that makes jets fly, cars run, and human beings live comfortably in the most inclement of places.

This modern-day miracle we know as petroleum, is much maligned. There are those who purposely bear false witness against it, and there are the masses who believe them.

Lord, what fools these mortals be!
