About the 'record turnout' for Obama...
It appears that a lot of older white people who voted in 2004 stayed home in November, 2008 because they didn't like either candidate. Despite an unusually large number of newly registered young and minority voters who supported Obama, the turnout percentage actually decreased from 2004. The absolute number of votes cast inc reased in 2008, but population grew even faster.
I somehow suspect they won't be staying home in 2010.
