Helping urban youth
Today's Chicago Sun-Times has an interesting article about a Chicago community organization, the Black Star Project, which seeks to improve the lot of inner city black youth in a positive manner. Their mantra is "Educate or Die".
Out of the trillions of dollars in the "Stimulus Plan", could we get Barack Obama to fund the purchase of this article for free distribution to our black youths? It is the true story of Alex Haley's experiences in the United States Coast Guard, back when parts of our nation were still segregated, and how he used initiative to create his own opportunities. Of course, that lowly enlisted Coast Guardsman went on to write "Roots" which was turned into a stunning mini-series for TV.
