Forty Two years ago today
Forty two years ago today on the Jewish calendar, June 7 on the Gregorian calendar used in the US, on the third day of the Six Day War in which the Arab nations surrounding Israel promised to "push it into the sea," Israeli forces entered the Old City of Jerusalem.
Violating the terms of the 1948 treaty, Jordan divided the city and retained control of the eastern part of Jerusalem containing areas important to Jews, as well as Christians and Muslims. Under the 1948 treaty Jews were to have access to their holy places; instead Jordan denied them this right while razing many of them. Israel's complaints at these blatant violations were ignored.
After their 1967 victory, Israel reunited the city, opening up the holy places to all.
Here is the live broadcast of that momentous occasion.
