Obama Energy Plan: Fill Tires Not Oil Tanks

It appears we can add automobile fuel efficiency and oilfield recovery forecasting to the already extensive Areas of Obama's Sudden Expertise list.

Speaking Wednesday at a Springfield, MO campaign event, Obama explained the folly of opening restricted offshore waters to oil and gas drilling: [Video]

"We could save all the oil that they're talking about getting off drilling if everybody was just inflating their tires and getting regular tune-ups. You'd actually save just as much."

Beyond the obvious question of where he pulled this clearly arbitrary equivalence from -- there's that awkward one of relevance.  Even if extensive research of expert opinion somehow supported this impetuous declaration -- just what type of argument would it make against drilling?

Suppose McCain were to announce his opposition to leveraging solar, wind, and other "renewable" energy sources because lowering thermostats to 68 in the winter and raising them to 74 in the summer would save comparable energy.

Just imagine the howling from the media.
