Iolani Palace takeover update

Did a divorce spark the takeover of the only (former) royal palace in the United States? And you thought the House of Windsor's marital troubles were wacky?

AT contributor Andrew Walden, writing in The Hawaii Reporter provides an update on the takeover of the Iolani Palace in Honolulu.

The so-called "Hawaii Kingdom Government" (HKG) is the organization that took over the grounds of Iolani Palace Wednesday morning. According to its Web site the group is headed by self appointed "Royal Majesty" Nalayne Mahealani Asing.

In a 2000 family court divorce proceeding, Asing's former husband was awarded control of a Hawaiian Homelands lease in Kalawahine. Mrs. Asing appealed all the way to the Hawaii Supreme court. Was the seed planted when Mrs. Asing's claims were rejected in a "summary disposition" by the Hawaii Sate Supreme Court on Nov. 22, 2004? Mrs. Asing does not respond to an emailed request for comment, but nine months after the Supreme Court rejected her appeal, the Hawaiian Kingdom Government was born. See this.
