Battlefield memorial defaced

Vandals have defaced the Tippecanoe Battlefield Monument in Indiana, on the 196th anniversary of the battle, and just in time for Veterans Day.

From the Journal and Courier online of Lafayette, Indiana:

Sometime late Wednesday, slogans were painted on all four sides of the 90-foot, marble obelisk that was erected here in 1908.

"We have no idea who would have done it, or why, other than it happened to be the anniversary of the battle," said Kathy Moore, battlefield park manager.

Messages spray-painted on the monument said, "America repent," "Justice will be served," "Coward," "Give us back our spiritual capital" and "Tecumseh's not dead."
In addition, the top of the monument was snapped off.

This is a disgrace to the memory of all who died at the battle, whether American soldiers or Native Americans. May the damage be quickly repaired.
