Fluorescent lights: inauthentic, or a way to save the planet?

What is a good anti-global warming crusader to do? Laurie David's stopglobalwarming.com website tells us that one way we can "take action" is to:

Use Compact Flourescent Bulbs

Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Save 300 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $60 per year.

But Al Gore, in Earth in the Balance, already told us that we've developed "an apparent obsession with inauthentic substitutes for direct experience with real life," such as "Astroturf, air conditioning and fluorescent lights ... Walkman and Watchman, entertainment cocoons, frozen food for the microwave oven," and so on. [emphasis added]

What's a (carbon dioxide-exhaling body to do?

(Jack Kemp is not the former politician of the same name.)
