Where is our Churchill?
Re: J. Peter Mulhern's question Who is our Churchill? He is a prominent member of the American public forum, just as Churchill was of the British forum. He is the man who said on Meet the Press that World War III has begun, just as Churchill spoke of the gathering storm in Europe. Like Churchill, he is the author of several books, most recently "Winning the Future" and "Rediscovering God in America." Like Churchilll, he is a conservative, but a gadfly in his own party. Like Churchill, he is a former office holder who is currently out of office. Like Churchill, he has exhibited personal habits that got him into trouble. Like Churchill, he is extremely intelligent and articulate. Like Churchill, he is a Christian. He is, of course, Newt Gingrich. Unfortunately, our political system is unduly rigid. The British parliamentary system permitted them to change leaders very quickly. We can only change them every four years. Gingrich is so controversial, not unlike Churchill was before 1939, that it will take a series of terrorist attacks to wake us up to the real danger, if we wake up even then, and by that time we may have a Democrat who just took office and be stuck with him/her until it is almost too late. We are in considerable danger. Fox's "24" may be more prophetic than most will ever believe . . . until it comes true. Bill Storey Rancho Murieta, CA |
