Union uprising at the WaPo
Yes, the wheels are coming off at the New York Times, but things aren't much better at the venerable Washington Post. One thing that is often overlooked in the decline of newspapers is fact that it is a heavily unionized industry with rigid workplace rules that are not in keeping with the competitive world they find themselves.
Post reporters and pressmen are represented by the AFL CIO affiliates. CWA Local 14201 represents mailers, utility mailers and helpers, and the Washington—Baltimore Newspaper Guild, CWA Local 32035, represents newsroom and commercial workers.
Recently, they have been staging protests at the annual meeting and mounting a media campaign in Washington. They are running both television and radio spots.
Invoking the memory of Rosa Parks and singing "we shall overcome" the union local has become increasingly vocal. Union issues were a big part of the Knight Ridder sale.
Basically, they want a raise.
