Mommyblogs

Many people have observed the democratizing effect of the internet on public discourse, disempowering elites by diminishing their preferential position in the distribution of information. I had never before thought about it, but one of the most important spheres in which the national conversation will continue to change because of the internet is that of the family and home.

To but it bluntly, career women have ruled the roost ever since the dawn of feminism in Betty Friedan's day. Because almost the only women with access to mass media were those who had worked their way up the journalistic hierarchy (a profession whose time and travel demands are often incompatible with child—rearing), we tended to hear from them, and only very rarely from stay—at—home moms.

A new (to me) website called Spunky Home School offers a literary thrashing to feminist writer Linda Hirschman. As interesting as the piece itself is the indication of things to come from Mommyblogs. The formerly voiceless are becoming empowered in all spheres of life.
