Mike G., one of our regular emailers who has a habit of asking very interesting questions, asks a good one:

Is it just me, or does it seem beyond coincidental that the federal government reduces New York City's Homeland Security budget, whereupon a NYC and al—Queda  subway scare dominates the news?

I don't know the answer. But it is wise to keep a running record of such coincidences, if that they be.
