Our opponent's mentality

By

Aussiegirl writes insightfully at Ultima Thule on the hugely important matter of our collective understanding the mentality of Islamo—fascists. The literate and intriguing analysis focuses on the concept of honor as a social control mechanism (my label, not hers). She explains the concept of honor is so important because of a lack of commitment to the rule of law. And she notes Arab and Muslim behavior which is motivated by honor.

It is a very helpful concept to use, because we can realte to honor from the inside, as it were. Honor was long a social control mechanism in the West (think duels), and in other societies, such as Japan. I've spent a good part of my academic and consulting career looking at questions related to this issue. The subtitle of my doctoral dissertation analyzing the management system of one of the biggest companies in Japan in 1976 was Strategy, Structure, and Culture. So, of course, I have a few reservations about other factors which must also be considered. No concept explains everything.

But any analysis with a focus one one factor inevitably leaves aside the complexities. Aussiegirl does not overstate her case. She has a focus. I have no reservations in recommending the article, for it will challenge assumptions and give you a new lens for viewing our opponents in the Long War.
