Canada's measured move to conservatism

By

Our contributor Paul Jackson writes a wise column in the Calgary Sun with the message that his American conservative friends may be letting their expectations for Stephen Harper's ability to move Canada rightward get a bit ahead of the pace which is possible. Since I would like to think of myself as Paul's friend, and since I have triumphantly welcomed PM Harper's brilliant political successes in the last four months, Paul may have me in mind, among others.

Paul correctly points out that change will not come to Canada at the pace it occurred in the UK under Thatcher, and in America under Reagan. Canada is not a two party system, and PM Harper lacks a Parliamentatry majority. there are other obstacles as well, not least the considerable vested interests with a stake in continuing liberal spending on health care and social services.

All this is true, and a welcome caution. The change will be deliberate and measured. But I have not seen a leader as skilful as Harper in quite a long time. May he continue with his program for many years.

Thanks, Paul. I needed that.
