Laid back, enlightened Santa Cruz
The latest in tolerance:
Vandals painted anti—Christian messages on five churches and two other places with Christian ties in Santa Cruz over the weekend, police said Tuesday.
The vandals equated Christianity with Nazism by stenciling a cross, an equal sign and a swastika on the sides and doors of the buildings. No arrests have been made but police are investigating it as a hate crime, which would add penalties to the vandalism, Sgt. Bernie Escalante said.
The symbols were discovered Sunday morning, and many of the churches removed them before services began.
