"Unemployment Calims Plunge" 

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) —— First—time claims for state unemployment benefits plunged by 36,000 to a seasonally adjusted 271,000 in the week ended Jan. 14, the Labor Department said Thursday.

This marked the lowest level for initial claims since mid—April 2000. Read the full report.

The four—week average of new claims also fell, down by 12,000 to 299,000 last week, the lowest since mid—October 2000.
