While they can

The Jewish Agency in Israel is said to be bracing itself for the exodus of thousands of French Jews, fleeing for their lives in the face widespread anti—Semitism. Not only did the wife of President Jacques Chirac sit calmly through a repulsive display of anti—Semitism at a theatrical performance, French courts are refusing to punish Arab youths who attack Jews with the epithet 'dirty Jew,' and instead fine a Jew who brings legal action against his attackers.

The handwriting is indeed on the wall for French Jews willing to look at it. They should leave as quickly as an orderly departure can be arranged. Undoubtedly, their departure will be the occasion for denunciations of their efforts to evacuate their financial assets from France. If pain is inflicted upon the French economy, expect conspiracy theories about 'Jewish bankers' to become once again popular in France and beyond.

The United States Congress should consider legislation to permit French Jews fleeing religious persecution to obtain refugee status in the United States. Of course, the Bush Administration, anxious for French cooperation in the UN Security Council, and for the exchange of information on terror groups with French Intelligence agencies, would oppose such legislation. But the mere introduction of such a bill in the House and the Senate would send a message to France that its anti—Semitism is being noticed abroad.
