'W' also stands for Winston
A fair analogy can be drawn between the press situation facing George W, Bush today and that facing Winston Churchill before he became Prime Minister of Great Britain. My cyber—pal Gary Larson (not the cartoonist), writing in The Intellectual Conservative, draws our attention to the very hostile media climate in Britain for those who warned that the rise of Hitler was creating a national security nightmare.
Like Bush today, Churchill faced personal vilification from the elite media. He was called a 'blackguard' by the powerful editor of the London Times, his chief media antagonist. But against the overwhelmingly negative media structure, there did exist an ally for Churchill, Lord Beaverbrook, whose publications saw fit to print Churchill's writings, when his sole official position was Member of Parliament.
French President Chirac maintains that history never repeats itself. He is wrong.
