Truman

By

R.L.A. Schaefer of Dubuque, Iowa begs to differ on the comparison between Harry Truman and George Bush:

Unfortunately, Truman 1) was not informed about all of the Communist infiltration of the U.S. government, and 2) overdid loyalty so that he did not take seriously the internal threat in the way that Bush has taken seriously the threat in the U.S. of terrorism (cf., Patriot Act). And the ruthless Truman compared Dewey to Hitler, whereas Democrats today compare Bush to Hitler. Both Truman and Bush used the legislative process in a rather partisan way; but Truman was slapping Republicans in the face who had avoided partisanship on the grounds that conflict stops at the water's edge, whereas Democrats started attacking Bush shortly after some degree of non—partisanship emerged after 9/11. Finally, voting fraud seems more likely to have been engaged in by the incumbent Truman's party, whereas the fraud now seems to be done more by the incumbent Bush's opponents.
