Tarnished honor

By

Spanish troops are not happy about being pulled out of Iraq by their new Socialist government. According to French news agency AFP,  privately some said the "honour of the Spanish army" might have been tarnished by the sudden withdrawal, especially in the light of recent attacks by Sadr's Mehdi Army militia.

Spain's warriors have undoubtedly developed mutual respect with the troops of other nations, such as Poland, with whom they have been serving. It must be humiliating to be so quickly withdrawn, before completion fo their mission, and leaving behind brave warriors from their former coalition partners.

It remains to be seen what the longer term consequences will be for Spain's political system. There are more chapters to be written in this story.
