Rutgers University and anti-Semitism
Rutgers University has an anti—Semitism problem. The University was to be the host of a pro—Palestinian conference which would have included terrorist sympathizers and people who made anti—Semitic statements, which was fortunately cancelled.
Now, there is evidence of an even darker side to campus life, as a student newspaper has published a cartoon showing a stereotyped Jew suspended in a carnival—type contraption, with the caption, "Knock a Jew in the oven...three throws for one dollar." The paper accepted the cartoon from an anonymous source.
Not only is this unbelievably offensive, it is incitement to violence against Jews. But the University plans to take no action against the paper, which will continue to receive funding from mandatory student fees. Citing freedom of the press, university officials say their hands are tied.
Is there anyone who believes that the University would take no action against a cartoon depicting the lynching of blacks, and offering readers a caption indicating that they could participate in the "fun"? Or would that be intolerably "insensitive"?
Update: President Richard L. McCormick of Rutegers has called upon the offending nespaper to apologize.
