Poem to the burka voters
Reader Jo Bond sent us a poem she wrote about the Afghan women voters described by A.M Mora y Leon over the weekend. We like it:
All I know is what I saw in the picture
Dark eyes beneath blue linen
Manicured hands holding the document.
Did she wake up this morning and say
'What shall I wear?
For Making History'
Did she go from the burgundy
To the teal green
To the saffron
And finally decide on the water blue
Embroidered in the same aqueous hue?
Did she call her sister
And ask 'What shall we wear?
Today we make History.'
Or does she just go because
It is a day to wear the blue
To get out
To giggle with sisters under scarves?
To flirt
To gossip
Or does she carefully lift the Document
From a cedar box
Read every word
Read every word again
And go out into the world
To Make History?
