Jeffords to retire

By

Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords has announced his plan to retire. Presumably allowing him to spend more time near Benedict Arnold's grave.

This means Senators Corzine (assuming he is elected Governor of New Jersey), Jeffords, Dayton, and Sarbanes will retire for Dems, with only Frist for the GOP. Add in vulnerable Dem seats in Michigan, Florida, Washington, Nebraska, North Dakota, and things don't look so bright for the mulish party. For the GOP, only Santorum in Pennsylvania, and Chafee in Rhode Island are realsitic targets for the Democrats, and in Rhode Island, the strongest possible opponents to Chafee have decided not to run.
