India and Israel to remain close

By

The election of a new government in India, dominated by the Congress Party, will not alter India's strategic relationship with Israel, which is good news for both nations. The Statesman newspaper of India  reports that defence minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee is telling critics within the Congress Party that cross—border terrorism is an urgent priority. Israel has played a very helpful role collaborating with India on the issue of Islamist terror. Moreover, big—ticket purchases of armaments from Israel, including the Phalcon airborne radar system, are integral to India's upgrading of its military capabilities.

As we have long noted, the growing alliance of India with Israel and the United States is a crucial geopolitical support for the war on terror, and for dealing with the potentially destabilizing rise of Chinese military and economic power. The fact that India can change governments while maintaining its geopolitical ties, is a sign of the strength of its commitment to democracy and freedom, worldwide.
